(Invited Reporter Suiwen Wu)Hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering, Tongji University and College of Civil Engineering, Tongji University, the fifth Kuang-hua Forum was successfully held on Dec. 8th to 10th, 2012, centering on innovations and implementations in Earthquake Engineering Research. This forum was funded by State Key Laboratory of Disaster Reduction in Civil Engineering, Tongji University, and Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Government Supported Universities (Tongji University) and so on.

After the 2008 M8.0 Wenchuan Earthquake, earthquake frequently hits the world, like the 2010 M8.8 Zhili Earthquake, the 2011 M7.1 Yushu Earthquake in Qinghai Province, China, the 2011 M9.0 Tohoku Earthquake in Japan and so forth. All of these earthquakes subject us to great economical loss and serious casualties, which necessitates the reconsideration on the innovations and implementations in earthquake engineering. 140 experts and young scholars from nine countries and regions attended this forum, including USA, Japan, Canada, France, German, Italy, Turkey, and China Taiwan and so on. The following topics have been discussed in detail: The function and reasonable application of shaking table experiments in Earthquake Engineering, the research and development of recovering seismic resistant structures, the seismic resistance and vibration control of high-rise, long-span and light structures, the new technologies and innovative materials in the retrofitting and strengthening of structures, performance-based design and so on.

The Opening Ceremony was presided by professor Xilin Lu, the Chair of this forum. The Vice President of Tongji University, Yiyi Chen and the Dean of School of Civil Engineering Xianglin Gu, the Consul of Italian Consulate General in Shanghai, Gabriele De Stefano delivered the welcome speeches respectively. The member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Lili Xie of Harbin Institute of Technology, Houqun Chen of China Institute of Water Resources and Hydropower Research and Haifan Xiang of Tongji University presented in this forum. On Dec. 10th, the meeting place was in Jia Ding Campus, and the representatives of this forum visited the multi-functional shaking table laboratory of Tongji University.

With the preparation of this forum sufficient, the reports innovative, the scope unprecedented, the experts gave a high evaluation for the forms and the results of the series of Kuanghua Forums.
