Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge-Insertion of the First Steel Pipe Pile


Gauge piles of guide frame in the first steel pipe pile of No. 174 pillar began insertion at the night of 12 September after delicate position of “Xiao Tian’e” crane ship. That indicated the first step for construction of Hong Kong Zhuhai-Macao Bridge.

Construction of No.174 pillar is part of CB05 Section which first began offshore construction among the three sections. Mainline of CB05 is designed 6653 meters with main bridge of 6368 meters, including Jiuzhou Navigation Bridge, non-navigable bridge and Link Bridge between Zhuhai and Macao.

It is reported that as the key step of substructure construction and the most difficult part in bridge construction, accuracy of steel pipe pile insertion affects the successful construction of prefabricated pile caps. Offshore construction is strongly influenced by environment such as wind, wave, current, tide, fog, rain, etc.

The construction company designed a proposal to control accuracy of steel tube pipe construction which was described as “positioning in three times and inserting the whole pillar”. “Xiao Tian’e” crane ship was used as the positioning ship for guide frame. All that guaranteed the positioning and insertion of 30-meter-long and 2-meter-diameter steel pipe piles. The second positioning steel pipe pile has been inserted till 13 September.
