Wuhan Erqi Yangtze River Bridge, constructed by CCCC Second Harbour Engineering Company LTD. , was opened to traffic on 31st December 2011.
The bridge was constructed within 39 months, with a total investment of RMB 7.284 billion. It is a major bridge crossing the Yangtze River on the second ring road of Wuhan, being 3.2km away from the Second Yangtze River Bridgee upstream and 6.8km away from the Tianxingzhou Yangtze River Bridge downstream. The project starts from Fazhan Avenue in Hankou and ends at Heping Avenue in Wuchang, with a total length of 6,507m, including the 2,922 meters main bridge and the 3,585 meters auxiliary works at both banks. The main bridge is a three-tower cable stayed bridge with main span of 2×616 meters . The three 209-meter high main towers are shaped as vase which imply the meaning of “Three Towns (Hankou, Wuchang and Hanyang)”. Designed with a driving speed of 60km/h and 4 lanes in each direction, the bridge is currently the widest river-crossing passageway in Wuhan.
Erqi Yangtze River Bridge is a project with huge work scale and high technical difficulty. In the construction of the tower foundation, an Anchor-pier system was created for the first time for positioning the ultra-large steel cofferdam, a 27m-ultra-long steel sheet pile cofferdam was adopted to substitute the conventional steel cofferdam for pile caps construction, and the foundation construction of the towersswere completed only in one dry season, thus the process for constructingpylons and girders at the same time was successfully implemented for the three-tower cable-stayed bridge with the 3rd longest main span in the world. In addition, the construction of towers and lower girders waschanged from the conventional multi castings to one integrated casting, and the height of casting section of the towers were increased from conventional 4.5m to 6m, which increased the construction efficiency significantly.The bridge is completed 9 months ahead of scedule.
